Work begins on overpass at I-59/U.S. 49
SUMMARY: Travelers heading south of Highway 49 in Hattiesburg should be aware of new construction work by MDOT crews repairing an overpass hit for the second time in January by an oversized vehicle. The outside lane of I-59 South is closed for repairs, while the inside lane of U.S. 49 below the bridge is also closed. An emergency contract was awarded to Key Construction for around $300,000 to address the damage. MDOT plans to install an advance warning system for over-height loads in the area, urging drivers with vehicles higher than 30 feet to obtain a permit for access.
