Mother, acquaintance charged in brutal death of one-year-old

SUMMARY: Police are investigating a case of felony child abuse in which a child was found unresponsive and later pronounced dead. The child's mother and her acquaintance, identified as Coleman, are currently facing charges, but the chief anticipates that these will be upgraded to capital murder pending the coroner's report. The chief expressed concern over the amount of trauma and bruising on the child's body. Coleman, who had custody of the child, brought the child to the attention of a neighbor but then left. The chief described his actions as “cowardice” and urged anyone with information on his whereabouts to contact the police. Two suspects have also been identified in a separate homicide case.

The mother, Yolanda Hunter, and acquaintance Herman Coleman will both be charged with felony child abuse. Wade expects capital murder to replace the current charges pending further investigation and a completed autopsy report of the child. Hunter will soon be taken into custody but Coleman is still at large. This is a developing story.

Heal and Family Dental Care on Guy Pickle Drive will provide free extractions, fillings, and cleanings to those 18 and older on a first come, first served basis. Patients must bring a valid ID and list of current medications. The community has shown support, especially after last year's tornado recovery, inspiring the clinic to give back. Registration starts at 7:30 am with dentists working until 4:00 pm. This event is a way for the clinic to show appreciation for the community and give back to those in need.

A dentist's office in Amory is offering free dental care on Friday, May 10.

The Chamber of Commerce West Alabama has a program called Adopt A School, where businesses, organizations, or even fraternities and sororities partner with schools to give back to the community. Alabama Power chose York West Junior High School and will provide volunteers for school projects, career awareness programs, and more.
