Cicadas expected to takeover north Mississippi counties soon
SUMMARY: Dr. Blake Layton, an Extension Entomologist Specialist at Mississippi State, predicts the emergence of 13-year cicadas in North Mississippi. These cicadas, black with red eyes, have been underground feeding off roots and will now emerge to mate and start the cycle all over again. While they may cause noise disturbances in neighborhoods, they won't cause significant harm. Layton advises those with orchards to be cautious, as cicadas may damage tree twigs. The swarm of cicadas will last until June, and the best solution for their loud noise is wearing earplugs. Planting fruit trees during this time is not recommended.

Grads take part in Mag Chain ceremony
SUMMARY: Students at Mississippi University for Women took part in the Magnolia Chain Ceremony, a tradition dating back to the late 1800s on the Columbus campus. The ceremony serves as a bridge between student life and becoming an alum of the university, connecting graduates to the “Long Blue Line” of past alumni. Each student received a live magnolia flower, where the leaves symbolize strength and the blossoms represent prosperity, as they move on to the next stage of their lives. The W also held two graduation ceremonies to cap off the event. The tradition of Mag Chain is a meaningful way for graduates to stay connected even as they go their separate ways.
