JPD looks to use cameras to tackle crime in the city
SUMMARY: The city council approved a measure requiring store owners to install cameras connected to the city's Blue Light Camera Network to improve safety. Vice Council President Angelique Lee introduced the ordinance, which must go through final review before going into effect on May 23rd. Councilman Kenneth Stokes supported passing the ordinance immediately, citing violent crimes at convenience stores. JPD's Asst. Chief Vincent Grizell confirmed the link between violence and these stores. Chief Wade supported the measure to enhance safety. Owners must install digital security cameras covering store entryways and parking lots, connecting to the Blue Light Camera Network. The goal is to prevent violent incidents like carjackings.
