College Signings Recap: 4-25-2024
SUMMARY: Several student athletes in the area signed with colleges to continue their academic and athletic careers. In Sumter Central, four Jaguars signed with colleges including West Bay Collegiate Academy and West Liberty University for football and Beville State Community College and Coastal Alabama for basketball. Meridian High School also had four state champs sign with colleges such as Pearl River Community College and East Mississippi Community College. Coach Ron Norman is proud of his players and happy they are staying in Mississippi. In Newton County, five Cougars will be cheering or performing at colleges like East Central Community College and Southern Miss. Congratulations to all the student athletes who signed.

New owners take over Mayflower Cafe
SUMMARY: New owners of the Mayflower Cafe in Brooklyn plan to reopen the historic restaurant with the same old flavor and charm that customers have loved for over 80 years. Hunter Evans and Cody McCain, owners of the well-known restaurant Elvies, are refurbishing the cafe with their own hands to preserve its iconic atmosphere. The menu will highlight seafood dishes such as oyster fling, shrimp fest, and catch of the day. They aim to continue the legacy of the Mayflower Cafe and hope to create a spark in Jackson's downtown area. The restaurant is set to open for dine-in by the end of the summer.
The Mayflower Cafe now has new owners, and they may look familiar.

Nonprofit hosts fundraiser honoring former NEMCC police chief
SUMMARY: A Boonville nonprofit, Project Domino Effect, is hosting a fundraiser in memory of former campus police chief Chief Anthony Anderson, who passed away earlier this year. The fundraiser will be the first Chief Anthony Anderson Law Enforcement versus Fire Allstar Memorial softball game, scheduled for October as part of the Boonville Main Street Association Fall Festival. The event will take place at the Northeast Mississippi Community College Lady Tigers softball field. 20% of the funds raised will be donated to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, with the remaining money going towards spreading acts of kindness across Northeast Mississippi. Anderson passed away after collapsing during a basketball game in March.

Property owners in North Jackson concerned about property values, crime
SUMMARY: Stokes wrote a letter to congressional leadership asking for an investigation into the deteriorating conditions of McWillie Dr. in North Jackson. Property owners are concerned about the decrease in property value due to crime in the area, including violence, trespassing, loitering, and prostitution. Business owners are requesting a consistent police presence to address these issues. The presence of McWillie Elementary School in the area is also a major concern for residents, who fear for the safety of their children. Residents are calling for community action to address these longstanding problems and improve the area.
