Mississippi Delta residents concerned about broadband expansion

SUMMARY: Mississippi has been awarded over a billion dollars in federal grant money to bridge the digital divide and expand broadband internet access. Concerns have been raised by Delta residents and lawmakers that the Mississippi Delta region will be overlooked in the distribution of funds, as it has been in the past. Vice Mayor Barbara Brooks of Leland, Mississippi, expressed worries about the region being left out, as she struggles with inadequate internet connectivity for city business and Zoom meetings. However, the director of the office in charge of internet expansion reassures that the Delta will not miss out on funding, and plans to review and finalize data for federal approval over the next 90 days. The funding could potentially be available by next fall.

SUMMARY: Habitat for Humanity of the Pine Belt is building a new home for a deserving local family, but they need help to finish construction. The family, including T. Bobby Moore, who lost everything in Hurricane Katrina, is excited for their new home on Park Avenue in Hattisburg. Moore has completed financial literacy courses and is close to completing her volunteer hours. Volunteers are needed to finish the project by the end of July. To help, contact Habitat for Humanity of the Pine Belt at 601-582-4663. The money raised from a recent charity golf tournament is going towards building Moore's new home, the 72nd built by the organization since 1990.

Arrest made in Jasper County human trafficking case
