Mississippi bill restricting where transgender people can use bathroom dies at capitol
SUMMARY: The Mississippi SAFER Act, aimed at restricting transgender individuals from accessing restrooms and locker rooms aligned with their gender identity, has failed. Sponsored by Republican Sen. Josh Harkins, the act was inspired by support from GOP lawmakers after an incident in an Alaska gym. It garnered national attention, supported by athletes like Paula Scanlan, and advocated for “safe spaces” for women. Despite this, Democratic opposition led to its demise before the legislative deadline, preventing it from reaching Gov. Tate Reeves. Mississippi has previously passed laws on gender-related issues, including bans on transgender athletes in women's sports and gender-affirming care for minors.

Mississippi lawmakers kill mobile sports betting bill
SUMMARY: Mississippi lawmakers let a proposed mobile sports betting bill, the Mississippi Mobile Sports Wagering Act, expire without passage. Initially aimed at legalizing full mobile sports gambling with casino protections, it was amended by the House to partner with existing casinos. However, the Senate removed all new provisions, maintaining the current law prohibiting off-premises mobile sports betting. Despite Gaming Commissioner Jay McDaniel's support, noting potential revenue growth and appeal to neighboring states like Alabama, Mississippi remains without the amendment as 29 other U.S. states, including North Carolina, have adopted mobile sports betting with reported success.
