Mississippi is one 14 states turning down federal money to feed low-income kids in the summer. Here’s why
SUMMARY: This summer, lower-income families in the US could receive help buying groceries through a federal program, except in 14 states with Republican governors who have declined to participate, citing various reasons such as philosophical disagreements with welfare and technical issues. The program offers $120 per child for groceries over three months, aiming to alleviate child hunger when school is not in session. States bear 50% of the administrative costs, while the federal government covers the benefits. Some 10 million eligible children live in non-participating states. States that rejected the program could enroll in future years, and controversy has arisen as some argue existing food programs are inadequate.
