Lawmakers decline to submit budget recommendation for upcoming legislative session
SUMMARY: Mississippi lawmakers did not submit a budget recommendation for the coming fiscal year, adjourning without consensus ahead of the 2024 legislative session. The Joint Legislative Budget Committee couldn't agree with Governor Tate Reeves in December, leading to a stalemate over differing financial priorities. Reeves seeks further personal income tax cuts, possibly aiming for full elimination, creating a $113 million gap between his vision and the lawmakers' preferred $7.5 billion budget, which they argue aligns with projected state revenue for FY 2025. The session is set to begin on January 2.
