Senate Gaming Chair: Legalizing mobile sports betting ‘more complicated’ than people realize
SUMMARY: Mississippi's efforts to legalize mobile sports betting are hampered by casino industry opposition, fearing it will cut their revenue by lessening in-person gambling. Governor Tate Reeves had signed House Bill 606 to consider mobile betting legalization, but a study committee faced pushback despite evidence from other states, like Tennessee, showing substantial tax revenue from mobile sports betting. The casino industry's dominance complicates policy-making, as it's a major employer and investor in the state's tourism. Senate Gaming Chair David Blount deems the process complex but continues to explore options for legal mobile gambling despite legislative challenges.
