Biloxi mayor backs AG after secretary of state’s attack over tidelands leases

SUMMARY: Andrew “FoFo” Gilich has expressed for Lynn Fitch and Department of Marine Resources (DMR) Executive Director General Joe Spraggins in their fight against the enforcement of tidelands leases along Mississippi's Coast. Gilich believes that Secretary of Michael Watson's efforts to enforce tidelands leases are a waste of time and money, as local governments are already providing sufficient protection for the tidelands. Gilich praised Fitch for honoring a decision that Biloxi and to lease property for the rebuilding of a public pier. Watson has hired a private firm to prosecute entities violating tidelands leasing laws, but Gilich argues that this is unnecessary. There are currently over two dozen entities using tidelands without a lease, and around 12 are accused of not paying rent to state subleasing agencies. Tidelands leases generate approximately $10 to $12 million per year for local governments.

Mississippi legislature passes more digital-friendly method of issuing search warrants
