‘It’s something practical’: Senator speaks on law allowing sign language classes to count toward high school graduation
SUMMARY: Mississippi has implemented a new law allowing sign language to be taken as a foreign language credit in public schools. Governor Tate Reeves signed Senate Bill 2339, aimed at enriching the curriculum and possibly aiding retention compared to traditional foreign language courses. Mississippi currently has 22 certified American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters, fewer than some neighboring states. ASL educators, like Ole Miss instructor Ronda Bryan, believe the law will not only create job opportunities but also enhance the connection between the deaf community and society at large. The law's advocates are hopeful that it will encourage more students to learn sign language, fostering inclusivity and accessibility.

MDOC holding boxing matches in ring donated by Jay-Z to boost morale among inmates
SUMMARY: The Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC) is introducing sports programs in state-run prisons to improve rehabilitation. Activities like basketball, boxing, flag football, and softball aim to reduce inmate idleness and promote camaraderie. The boxing initiative, including a ring donated by Jay-Z, has been successful in reducing behavioral problems and boosting morale. Matches require physical exams, drug tests, and allow special family visits. Officials, medical staff, and trainers support the events. The donation was facilitated by Jay-Z's attorney, Marcy Croft, who also observed the program's impact.
