Mississippi should restore the voting rights of former felons, Democratic candidates say
SUMMARY: The Democratic nominees for attorney general and secretary of state in Mississippi have called for the state to stop defending a section of its constitution that permanently strips voting rights from certain felons. They argue that the ban is a violation of the US Constitution's ban on cruel and unusual punishment and is a continued punishment for individuals who have already served their sentences. The Republican incumbents, on the other hand, have filed papers asking for a rehearing and want to continue allowing the permanent disenfranchisement of certain residents. The case is currently being considered by the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

Mississippi Speaker’s tax reform plans entail lots of changes for state
SUMMARY: Mississippi legislators will examine substantial tax reforms in the next session, potentially leading to significant changes. Dr. Joshua Hendrickson from the University of Mississippi highlights the complications of the current tax system, which taxes income, sales, and savings interest, urging a streamlined approach. Previous efforts include a phased-in tax cut from 2022, championed by Governor Tate Reeves. However, complete elimination of income tax may necessitate compensatory tax increases. House Speaker Jason White indicates that discussions will cover income, gas, and the nation's highest grocery tax, balancing complex financial and political considerations to maintain city budgets.
