Mississippi Speaker’s tax reform plans entail lots of changes for state
SUMMARY: Mississippi legislators will examine substantial tax reforms in the next session, potentially leading to significant changes. Dr. Joshua Hendrickson from the University of Mississippi highlights the complications of the current tax system, which taxes income, sales, and savings interest, urging a streamlined approach. Previous efforts include a phased-in tax cut from 2022, championed by Governor Tate Reeves. However, complete elimination of income tax may necessitate compensatory tax increases. House Speaker Jason White indicates that discussions will cover income, gas, and the nation's highest grocery tax, balancing complex financial and political considerations to maintain city budgets.
