Gulfport man sentenced to 42 months after burning cross to intimidate Black neighbors
A Gulfport man will spend the next 42 months behind bars after burning a cross in his front yard in an attempt to intimidate his Black neighbors.
On Dec. 3, 2020, 24-year-old Axel Cox violated the Fair Housing Act when he used threatening and racially derogatory language toward the family before burning the cross in his yard.
According to court documents, Cox had a verbal dispute with the family prior to wedging two pieces of wood together, placing it in clear view of the victims' residence, dousing it in oil, and setting it alight. Cox later admitted that he was trying to get them to move out of the neighborhood.
“This cross burning was an abhorrent act that used a traditional symbol of hatred and violence to stoke fear and drive a Black family out of their home,” Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke said. “While one might think cross-burnings and white supremacist threats and violence are things of the past, the unfortunate reality is that these incidents continue…

Vehicle overturns on I-20 West in Jackson
SUMMARY: An overturned vehicle on Interstate 20 West in Jackson on April 29 caused traffic backup. One person was thrown from the vehicle and the second was trapped inside. A witness helped pull one person out of the car. Emergency responders, including the Mississippi Highway Patrol, Jackson police, firefighters, and AMR, arrived at the scene. Both the police officer and the driver were injured in the crash. The incident led to delays on the interstate as authorities worked to clear the scene.

State Senate confirms newest members on IHL Board of Trustees
SUMMARY: The Mississippi Senate confirmed four new members of the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning, including Charles Stephenson from West Point. Stephenson, CEO of Heartland Natural Resources LLC, will represent the Third Supreme Court District. He replaces Dr. Walt Starr of Columbus, whose term ends soon. JPS School Board approves demolition of three closed schools
SUMMARY: The Jackson Public School District Board of Trustees approved the demolition of three closed school sites – Baker Elementary, French Elementary, and Woodville Heights Elementary. The decision was made due to a lack of interest from potential buyers for redevelopment and issues with maintaining the upkeep of the buildings. The district will seek input from the community on what to do with the empty spaces once demolition is completed. No demolition date has been scheduled yet.
