Gulfport man sentenced to 42 years after burning cross to intimidate Black neighbors
A Gulfport man will spend the next 42 years behind bars after burning a cross in his front yard in an attempt to intimidate his Black neighbors.
On Dec. 3, 2020, 24-year-old Axel Cox violated the Fair Housing Act when he used threatening and racially derogatory language toward the family before burning the cross in his yard.
According to court documents, Cox had a verbal dispute with the family prior to wedging two pieces of wood together, placing it in clear view of the victims' residence, dousing it in oil, and setting it alight. Cox later admitted that he was trying to get them to move out of the neighborhood.
“This cross burning was an abhorrent act that used a traditional symbol of hatred and violence to stoke fear and drive a Black family out of their home,” Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke said. “While one might think cross-burnings and white supremacist threats and violence are things of the past, the unfortunate reality is that these incidents continue today….

Noxubee County CPS raises awareness about child abuse
SUMMARY: Child Abuse Awareness Month is recognized in April to bring attention to the issue of child abuse in America. Noxubee County Child Protection Services organized a rally and resource fair in Macon to educate the community about the signs of abuse and neglect, as well as how to report it anonymously. The event aimed to make people aware of preventative measures to protect children and vulnerable adults. The Social Service Team Leader emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety and well-being of children, who may not always have a voice in abusive situations. Child Protection Services extends its services to handle cases involving vulnerable adults, the elderly, and the disabled.

Citizen lends boat to deputies to rescue man at Lake Lowndes
SUMMARY: A fisherman in Lowndes County, Miss. fell out of his boat on Lake Lowndes, prompting a rescue operation. The man fell into the water after his seat broke while leaning back in a small plastic boat. He managed to call 911 and deputies, along with a good samaritan, went to find him clinging to his boat. The fisherman was wearing a life jacket and is expected to be okay. The incident occurred just before 9 AM and serves as a reminder of the importance of safety precautions while boating. JSU’s Tomekia Reed named Charlotte’s new head coach
SUMMARY: Tomekia Reed, head coach of Jackson State Women's Basketball team, has stepped down to take on the role of head coach for the Charlotte 49ers Women's Basketball team. Reed led Jackson State to their third SWAC championship and a spot in the NCAA tournament during her six-year tenure. UNC Charlotte Chancellor Sharon L. Gaber praised Reed as a talented coach with a commitment to excellence. Jackson State University officials thanked Reed for her success, which included five consecutive regular-season titles and four SWAC Coach of The Year awards. Reed leaves Jackson State with an overall record of 125-54, including three consecutive 20+ win seasons.
