Police engage the youth through summer program
SUMMARY: Local officials are taking action to address youth violent crime statistics during the summer months when school is out. Jackson Police Department (JPD) is offering summer camps with activities like character enrichment, academics, and daily outings to keep kids off the streets. JPD's Youth Citizens Police Academy is holding sessions in June and July for kids aged 5 to 12. The Hinds County Sheriff's Office is also partnering with the community to hold a youth summer program for vulnerable 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. Both agencies stress the importance of keeping children engaged in positive activities to prevent them from being influenced by criminal behavior.

JPS decides to tear down 3 abandoned schools in the district
SUMMARY: The Jackson Public Schools Board of Trustees approved the demolition of three elementary schools in Jackson due to lack of interest from potential buyers. Dr. Eric Greene cited the poor condition and location of the buildings as reasons for the lack of interest in repurposing them. Residents expressed mixed reactions to the decision, with some disappointed and others believing it was necessary. The school district is considering turning the vacant spaces into green spaces or parks after demolition. JPS plans to seek input from the community on what to do with the empty spaces once demolition is complete, with no scheduled date for demolition yet.
