Man accused of killing Biloxi cop still awaits trial nearly 5 years after murder
SUMMARY: Nearly five years ago, police officer Robert McKian was tragically gunned down outside the city's public safety center, shocking the community. The suspect, Darren Atkinson, remains at Mississippi State Hospital undergoing psych evaluations and treatment, delaying the trial. Velocity Clinical Research highlights World Clinical Trial Day

Popp's Ferry Road extension receives green light to move forward
SUMMARY: The Pops Ferry Road Extension project has received the green light to connect to Highway 90. After overcoming setbacks, the project, approved by state and federal agencies, is set to begin groundbreaking by mid-August. The $27 million project will pass through the Mississippi Coast Coliseum and Convention Center, incorporating an underpass to ensure safe visitor access. The project, part of a strategy to enhance traffic flow, will designate Pops Ferry Road as a state road, making it eligible for federal funds. This could potentially aid in replacing the problematic drawbridge, linking Pops Ferry to two federal highways and opening opportunities for federal assistance.

Local shrimpers say conditions not yet ideal for 2024 season
SUMMARY: Many shrimpers from the coast are heading west this weekend as Louisiana's inshore shrimp season opened on Thursday, while Mississippi waters remain closed. Min Trong, who sells shrimp from his van in Long Beach on weekends, is preparing to open a seafood store. He notes that for the second consecutive year, shrimping conditions have been less than ideal, driving prices down. Factors like excessive freshwater and wind are affecting shrimp availability. Trong anticipates Mississippi's shrimp season to open around mid-June but felt last year's season started too early. Shrimp prices have remained low for the past two years.
Minh Troung and other shrimpers say it'll be a few weeks before conditions are right for shrimping in the Mississippi Sound.
