New Legislative Session Begins
SUMMARY: The 2024 legislative session in Mississippi has begun with debate about increased education spending with fewer dollars collected from state income taxes. New House Speaker Jason White is focusing on job creation and removing the state's income tax. Legislators and Governor Reeves enacted Mississippi's largest ever tax cut, but there are concerns about the underfunded state employee retirement system and Medicaid expansion. Additionally, there are funding needs for Jackson, including infrastructure and economic development. The Department of Public Safety is asking for more money, and there is a debate about passing that cost on to local governments and school districts.
