MHA president calls for Medicaid expansion as nearly half of rural hospitals flirt with closure
SUMMARY: Almost half of Mississippi's rural hospitals could face closure, according to a report from the Center for Healthcare Quality and Payment Reform. Out of the state's 74 rural hospitals, 34 are struggling financially and 25 are at risk of closing immediately or in the near future. Greenwood Leflore is currently the hospital closest to shutting down. The report also revealed that 66% of rural hospitals in Mississippi are currently operating at a loss. The president of the Mississippi Hospital Association suggests that expanding Medicaid would help support these hospitals.
