‘Goon Squad’ members to be sentenced next week
SUMMARY: Six former Mississippi law enforcement officers will be sentenced next week for torturing two Black men in a racially motivated incident. Michael Corey Jenkins and Eddie Terrell Parker were subjected to violent torture in January 2023 by officers known as the “Goon Squad.” The officers burst into a home without a warrant, assaulted the men with stun guns and other objects, and even shot Jenkins in the mouth during a mock execution. The officers then planted drugs and a gun to cover up their actions. The officers plead guilty to assault, conspiracy, and obstruction of justice charges, with sentences ranging from five to 30 years.

SUMMARY: Deputies responded to a call about a shooting at Dave's Club in Winston County, Mississippi, where they found Steven Hunt with a gunshot wound to the lower abdomen. Hunt was taken to the hospital for treatment. A suspect named Tyler Steele turned himself in and was taken into custody. He is awaiting an initial court appearance. SUMMARY: An officer-involved shooting occurred in Gulfport, Mississippi following a call about a stabbing on Reed Avenue on May 4. According to Bailey Martin of the Mississippi Department of Public Safety, an altercation between an officer and the suspect led to the shooting. The suspect was taken to a local hospital for treatment, while the officer was unharmed. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is looking into the incident and will report their findings to the Mississippi Attorney General's Office.
