Mississippi lawmakers expected to vote on Medicaid expansion plan with work requirement
SUMMARY: Mississippi lawmakers are set to vote on expanding Medicaid coverage with a work requirement, which may not be approved by the federal government. If the requirement is rejected, the state would need to seek approval annually. The state, one of the poorest in the U.S., could benefit from providing coverage to thousands more people. Georgia, the only other state with a Medicaid work requirement, is currently in a legal battle with the federal government over the mandate. Despite initial resistance, the Republican-controlled Legislature is considering expansion to help financially struggling hospitals. Mississippi is among the 10 states that have resisted Medicaid expansion.
