The infamous Pod A at the Raymond Detention Center is officially closed
SUMMARY: Hinds County in Mississippi has officially closed down Pod A at the Raymond Detention Center, which has been causing security and operational issues for years. Inmates have been transferred to the Tallahatchie County Correctional Facility, over two hours away, which Sheriff Tyree Jones believes is safer and better equipped to handle detainees. The transfer has helped alleviate staffing issues at the Raymond Detention Center, which is currently understaffed. The county has entered a one-year contract with the private jail, with the possibility of extending it for two more years. Plans are also underway to build a new jail, expected to be ready by 2025.

SUMMARY: In Clay County, Mississippi, a Friday night altercation resulted in one man being hospitalized and another arrested. According to Sheriff Eddie Scott, the incident involved a stabbing where one man inflicted a serious arm injury on the other, requiring surgery. The victim has since been released from the hospital in Tupelo. Deputies apprehended Roger Shelton, charging him with aggravated assault and setting his bond at $15,000. SUMMARY: The former Sheriff's Boys and Girls Ranch in Lowndes County, Mississippi, will return to county control as Palmer Home for Children is ending its lease. The property, which spans about 60 acres, has been largely unused since Palmer Home moved its residential operations out of the area, leading to the ranch being vacant for a few years. The Lowndes County Board of Supervisors has decided to transfer the unleased portion of the property to the Lowndes County Industrial Development Authority and will assume responsibility for its upkeep. The property reverts to county use on July 1.
