UMMC breaks ground on new nursing building

Columbus man charged in connection with Meridian homicide
SUMMARY: Dedtrick Jones, a 20-year-old man from Columbus, has been charged with shooting and killing Marvin Horn Jr. in Meridian. The shooting took place on March 10 on Mosby Road. Jones was arrested by U.S. Marshals and Lowndes County deputies, with bond set at $1 million. A video of the arrest was captured by a WCBI viewer at a Highway 45 shopping center. Suspects wanted for firing shots into Masonic Temple in Jackson

Hurricane Katrina victim from Mississippi identified nearly 20 years later
SUMMARY: After almost 20 years, a Hurricane Katrina victim from Mississippi has been identified as Tonette Jackson. Her remains were discovered in 2005 in St. Martin, Mississippi, but remained unidentified until advanced DNA testing was conducted. Jackson and her husband were swept away by floodwaters during the hurricane, and her body was never found. Hardy, her husband, saw her in the water but she urged him to let go and take care of their family. Jackson's remains were exhumed in 2023 for testing, which ultimately led to her identification in 2024. Her story brings closure to her family after years of uncertainty.
