6 former Mississippi law officers sentenced in state court for torture of 2 Black men
SUMMARY: Six former white Mississippi law enforcement officers who pleaded guilty to torturing two Black men were sentenced in state court, despite already receiving federal prison terms of 10 to 40 years. The officers attacked Michael Corey Jenkins and Eddie Terrell Parker in 2023, engaging in violent and racist behavior. The state sentencing was seen as a test for the justice system's handling of racial crimes in Mississippi. The officers admitted to obstruction of justice, conspiracy to hinder prosecution, and home invasion. The case drew national outrage and calls for accountability within law enforcement. The victims have filed a civil lawsuit against the department.
