Love (and 460 million flowers) are in the air for Valentine’s Day, but not without a Miami layover
SUMMARY: The Miami International Airport is a key arrival point for 90% of flowers imported to the U.S. from South American countries like Colombia and Ecuador, especially during the Valentine's Day season. The airport is processing around 460 million flowers from these countries. U.S. Customs and Border Protection agriculture specialists play a vital role in preventing the entry of harmful pests and diseases through flower imports. They have inspected over 832 million stems of flowers and intercepted 1,100 plant pests so far. After the Valentine's Day rush, preparation begins for the next big flower day in the United States, which is Mother's Day in May.
