Tupelo Police respond to several shots fired calls over past week
SUMMARY: Tupelo residents are concerned after multiple shots fired calls in the past few days. The first incident was in the hillside area over the weekend, followed by another on Green Street on Monday night. No injuries were reported, but Police Chief John Quaka emphasized the illegality of discharging firearms in city limits, with exceptions for hunting on large properties. The chief believes the misdemeanor charge for this offense is not sufficient. An update on a shooting involving a 16-year-old boy will be provided on WTV 9 News. Residents are urged to refrain from firing guns in the city.

Title IX expansion causes lawsuit to be filed
SUMMARY: Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch and other Republican states are seeking to block a rule that would protect students against discrimination based on sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity in schools. Fitch believes the Biden administration has overstepped its legal authority in extending regulations to include discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. LGBTQ advocates argue that the rule is necessary to protect students who have faced physical harassment or assault in schools. There is ongoing political and legal conflict in Mississippi over LGBTQ issues, including laws preventing transgender female athletes from participating in girls' and women's sports teams. The Department of Education clarifies that the rule does not apply to sports teams and plans to issue a separate rule addressing sex-separate athletic teams.
