Title IX expansion causes lawsuit to be filed
SUMMARY: Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch and other Republican states are seeking to block a rule that would protect students against discrimination based on sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity in schools. Fitch believes the Biden administration has overstepped its legal authority in extending regulations to include discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. LGBTQ advocates argue that the rule is necessary to protect students who have faced physical harassment or assault in schools. There is ongoing political and legal conflict in Mississippi over LGBTQ issues, including laws preventing transgender female athletes from participating in girls' and women's sports teams. The Department of Education clarifies that the rule does not apply to sports teams and plans to issue a separate rule addressing sex-separate athletic teams.
