Focused on Mississippi: Century plant begins to bloom
SUMMARY: A group of people on East Whitworth Street in Hazelhurst have been patiently waiting for over 20 years for Stephanie Parish's agave plant, also known as a century plant, to bloom. After two decades of being a yard decoration, a stem has emerged and is reaching towards the sky, attracting attention. Although the plant will die after blooming, it has sprouted offspring that will continue the cycle. The process of waiting for the plant to bloom is compared to nurturing a child, and the group plans to invite people back in 21 years for the next bloom. The anticipation and excitement of witnessing the plant bloom after so many years is described as bittersweet.
