Cigar shop leaving Smith-Wills Stadium grounds after legislation scrutiny
SUMMARY: Churchill Cigar Shoppe, located on Smith Wills Stadium grounds, is closing after its 10-year anniversary in June due to legislative scrutiny over land use. Co-owner Preston Powell and Hank Aaron Sports Academy CEO Timothy Bennett aim to prevent contractual discrepancies and preserve the stadium's legacy for community sports. However, Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba criticizes House Bill 1983, signed by Governor Reeves, as a state power grab, alleging it undermines Jackson's resources. The bill includes state project funding but demands the land revert to state ownership, contradicting its 1944 deed stipulation for park purposes. Lumumba disputes the legislation's vagueness but vows litigation if necessary.
