Supreme Court rules against Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan
SUMMARY: The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled against President Joe Biden's student loan debt forgiveness program. The program, announced in August 2022, aimed to cancel up to $10,000 of student loan debt for borrowers earning under $125,000 annually. However, the court's 6-3 decision stated that federal law does not permit the Secretary of Education to cancel more than $430 billion in student loan debt. Republican lawmakers had previously pushed back against the program, and the federal government had approved over 16 million applications for debt forgiveness before it was halted. Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves praised the court's decision.
