One week left for residents to register to vote in Mississippi’s general election
SUMMARY: Residents of Mississippi have just one week left to register to vote in the 2023 general election. They can register in person at the clerk's office or through a mail-in registration application. In-person and mail-in absentee ballots for the election are currently available. Eligible voters can request a ballot from their circuit clerk. In-person absentee voting is also available on October 28 and November 4. Candidates and political committees supporting or opposing candidates must submit campaign finance reports by October 10. Reports can be filed via email, in-person, mail, or fax. SUMMARY: Gary Raymon Rush, a 35-year-old from Meridian, received a 50-year prison sentence without parole for sex crimes against a 12-year-old child. Circuit Court Judge Randi P. Mueller issued the sentence for sexual battery and two counts of touching a child for lustful purposes. Rush had been found guilty by a Biloxi jury after evidence surfaced that he had been caught in the victim's bedroom by a family member. The abuse occurred at night and started two weeks before it was discovered. Rush also had a prior guilty plea for attempted rape in Lauderdale County. He will serve his sentence in the Mississippi Department of Corrections.
