SUMMARY: The Jackson City Council has voted to transfer control of the city’s sewer system to a third-party manager, Ted Henifin. Henifin has been managing the city’s water infrastructure for the past six months since the collapse of a water treatment plant. The council voted 6-1 in favor of handing authority over the sewer system to Henifin. However, concerns were raised about raising rates for residents to improve the sewer system. Currently, there are over 200 active sanitary sewer overflows in the city, causing untreated wastewater to flow into the environment. The council will need approval from a U.S. District Court Judge before Henifin can start work.

SUMMARY: Mississippi State University’s Raspet Flight Research Laboratory has been selected by the U.S. Department of Defense to contribute to DARPA’s Albatross program, aiming to develop energy-efficient autonomous flight systems using environmental energy sources like thermals and wind. The program targets a 75% reduction in energy use for fixed-wing aircraft, significantly surpassing industry norms. Raspet will lead a multi-university collaboration with the University of Texas at El Paso and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, developing novel sensing algorithms and global weather models to enhance dynamic soaring for uncrewed aerial systems. The lab will handle testing, evaluation, and flight safety for Albatross prototypes.

McRae emphasized his commitment to making state funds work efficiently through conservative financial management. Additionally, the treasury returned historic levels of unclaimed money to residents, distributing $40 million in 2024 alone and a total of about $120 million overall to rightful owners in Mississippi.
