Roger F. Wicker Center opens at the Port of Gulfport
SUMMARY: The new Ocean Enterprises Roger Wicker Center has opened at the Port of Gulfport, bringing with it opportunities for research and development. The center will focus on highly technical research related to the blue economy, particularly in the area of uncrewed maritime systems. These systems, controlled from the center, will collect data and help study the vast expanse of the ocean. The research conducted at the center will contribute to economic growth in coastal Mississippi by uncovering resources and understanding how human activities impact them. The center will work closely with industry partner Ocean Arrow, which builds the vessels used for research. The coastal footprint of the University of Southern Mississippi is significant, accounting for one-third of research funding and providing high-paying, technical jobs for the region.
USM Associate VP of Coastal Operations Dr. Leila Hamdan joins the show to discuss the opening of the Roger F. Wicker Center.
