Prep basketball notebook: Local teams facing out of state squads

A trio of coast boys’ prep basketball teams spent the Thanksgiving week battling against several opponents from other states.

And some will get the chance to do just that again later this week.

, and Hancock all experienced varying degrees of success in outings in three different states against opposing squads outside of Mississippi and covering five different states last week.

The Greyhounds and head coach Matt Noblitt did not, as some might think, join the prestigious Catholic League out of New Orleans for hoops purposes only. It just might have seemed that way last week even though OSHS never actually left the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Prep basketball notebook: Moss Point boys headed north

The Tigers boys basketball team is taking a trip for the Thanksgiving holidays.

Starting Wednesday, the Tigers and top recruit Kedrick Osby will be competing in the five-day, eight-team Kevin Brown Memorial Tournament of Champions prep basketball event taking place in Washington, Ill. Washington is in North Central Illinois, just outside of Peoria, Ill.

Moss Point began play Wednesday night against the host school, Washington. There are eight teams from different parts of the country competing for the crown in the 17th annual invitational tournament.

Besides the Tigers and the host team, the Washington Panthers, the other schools in the tourney are the Blytheville Chickasaws (Blytheville, Ark.), the Coral Glades Jaguars (Coral Glades, Fla.), the Lincoln Park Lions (Chicago,…

Local notables featured in Egg Bowl action over the years

The annual Battle for the Golden Egg takes place in Oxford this week as hosts Mississippi State Thanksgiving night at Vaught-Hemmingway Stadium.

The list of Mississippians that have played in the game over the years, especially those with ties to the South portion of the state, is nearly endless. So for this particular effort, we will focus on in the “Southern Six” and some of the players from and linked to that area as we recall past Egg Bowls.

Vancleave High head coach Kevin Fant led High to a pair of state championships during his time as a Tiger. He then went on to start as a signal-caller for Mississippi State for several seasons.

Moss Point opens state playoffs with big 48-6 win over FCAHS – Our Mississippi Home

The state playoffs started for half of the six total classifications in Mississippi Friday night, as Class 4A, 3A and 2A all got underway.

In the “Southern Six”, home-standing thumped Forrest County AHS 48-6. The Tigers are the number two seed out of region 8-4A, and now stand 3-7 overall on the season. MPHS  jumped out to a 21-6 halftime lead and coasted to the win.
