Perry County to house first U.S. “green steel” plant
SUMMARY: The big news is that a “green steel” plant is slated to be built in Perry County, becoming the country's first of its kind. This plant will use clean hydrogen instead of coal to reduce carbon emissions and create jobs in the area, with nearly 7,000 jobs expected between the Perry County facility and another facility in Ohio. The project is a part of a $1.5 billion investment by the Biden administration to reduce pollution. Local businesses and contractors are expected to benefit from the project, and it is hoped to have a positive ripple effect on the community. More updates will follow on the project's progress.
A new “green steel” plant will soon put Perry County on the map for clean energy manufacturing and create hundreds of new jobs.

SUMMARY: April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and the Schaefer Center for Crisis Intervention in Pine Belt is working to break the stigma by encouraging everyone to get involved. They provide counseling and resources for victims of sexual assault, emphasizing the importance of being an active bystander to prevent or stop sex-related crimes. Every 68 seconds, an American is sexually assaulted, with one out of every six women and about 3% of men being victims. The Green Dot training empowers the community to intervene by being direct, delegating, or distracting in situations of potential harm. Taking action can make a difference in reducing the number of victims.

Jackson Police host youth basketball league
SUMMARY: Children in Jackson are being taught discipline and teamwork through the Police Athletic League (PALS) program, which involves basketball and classroom lessons. The goal is to keep kids out of trouble by keeping them busy and active. Solomon Vance, a 13-year-old participant, credits the program for helping kids stay out of trouble and building relationships with law enforcement. The program aims to make a direct impact on youth by providing a positive outlet and support system outside of their households. As youth crime rates increase, programs like PALS help steer kids in the right direction and provide a sense of community and support.
