National Teen Driver Safety Week with Gulfport High School
SUMMARY: Harrison County is experiencing minimal traffic tonight. However, across the nation, young people are being encouraged to buckle up and avoid distractions while driving. National Teen Driver Safety Week aims to decrease the number of teen driver vehicle accidents, which reached new highs last year. Lauren Martinez, a high school driver's ed instructor, emphasizes the importance of road safety education and the need for young people to take it seriously. Distracted driving, speeding, and not wearing seat belts are critical issues contributing to these accidents. Martinez hopes that more education and preparation will lead to safer roads and prevent future accidents. She shares a personal story about losing her cousin in a fatal car crash due to distracted driving and highlights the importance of wearing a seat belt. The driver's ed course at the local high school has seen positive enrollment numbers, and students are encouraged to prioritize road safety and avoid distractions. The senior class at Golf Board High School is one of the largest in the state of Mississippi, and their participation in driver's ed shows promising results for improving teen driver safety.
