75% of Mississippi third graders pass reading test in 2024
SUMMARY: The Mississippi Department of Education announced that 75.7% of third graders passed the initial administration of the reading assessment for the 2023-24 school year. This percentage is similar to the pass rate for the previous year and higher than the rate before the pandemic. Students who do not pass the initial test have up to two more attempts to retest. The MDE is working to support instruction and resources aligned with the Science of Reading. Some students may qualify for exemptions to be promoted to fourth grade despite not passing the assessment.

Gulfport teen charged with 2 counts of capital murder
SUMMARY: Gulfport police arrested 17-year-old Lawrence Corley IV and charged him with two counts of capital murder after a shooting on May 13. One victim, Temi Lawal, was found dead at the scene, while another victim, Lorenzo Stennis, died from his injuries at the hospital. Police determined that an armed robbery planned by Corley, Lawal, and Stennis led to the deaths of the victims. Corley was denied bond and booked into the Harrison County Adult Detention Center. Bond denied for man charged in Jackson park homicide
SUMMARY: Nineteen-year-old Daveon Lindsey appeared in court for the murder of Melvin McNair, Jr. at a Jackson park. Lindsey was denied bond for capital murder and armed robbery charges, but received bonds for other related charges. The shooting happened at Parham Bridges Park, where McNair was found dead, and his stolen vehicle was recovered. Lindsey led police on a chase and admitted to shooting McNair with an assault rifle. Lindsey was found with the victim's blood and credit cards. His motive remains unknown. Lindsey has a prior arrest for burglary.
