Mississippi receives nearly $3M for fishery disaster from 2019 Bonnet Carré Spillway openings
SUMMARY: The Mississippi Gulf Coast will receive $2,993,283 from a federal disaster fund to address the impacts of fishery disasters, following damage caused by the Bonnet Carré Spillway openings in 2019. The openings led to significant losses in oyster and shrimp populations due to an influx of freshwater into the Mississippi Sound. The federal funding, part of a $42 million relief package for several regions, was approved after a request from Governor Tate Reeves. The distribution comes after criticism from U.S. Senator Roger Wicker about the slow delivery of aid. NOAA officials will coordinate the distribution with affected states and tribes.
