Mississippi legislators won’t smooth the path this year to restore voting rights after some felonies
SUMMARY: Kenneth Almons, who served 23 years for armed robbery, wants his voting rights back after being law-abiding since his release. At age 51, he appealed to Mississippi lawmakers, where state laws currently strip voting rights for various felonies, lists influenced by historical racial biases. To regain voting rights, convicts must receive a pardon or legislative approval, both rare occurrences. Although a bill for automatic restoration post-conviction was passed by the House, it was later blocked in the Senate. Over 50 bills aimed at individuals' voting rights restoration have been filed, pending review before the session ends in May.

New Orleans Pelicans swept by Oklahoma City in first round of playoffs
SUMMARY: The New Orleans Pelicans, despite their best regular season record since 2007-08, suffered a first-round playoff elimination by the Oklahoma City Thunder due to Zion Williamson's injury. In Game 4, the Thunder sealed the series sweep with a 97-89 win, propelled by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander's MVP-caliber performance, including a key fourth-quarter defensive rebound. Pelicans coach Willie Green expressed pride in his team's effort despite the loss. C.J. McCollum topped the Pelicans with 20 points, but their 3-point shooting was lacking. Williamson is expected to recover for the next season, while the Thunder advance to face either the Clippers or the Mavericks.

Mississippi lawmakers expected to vote on Medicaid expansion plan with work requirement
SUMMARY: Mississippi is poised to vote on expanding Medicaid to more people, albeit with a work requirement which may not receive federal assent. The state's legislative bodies have come up with a compromise plan requiring 100 hours of employment monthly for those not offered health insurance, or meeting other conditions like being a student or parent to a young child. If refused by the federal government, Mississippi will repeatedly seek approval annually. Georgia, facing a similar federal pushback, is litigating to maintain its work mandate. Expanding Medicaid could assist many Mississippians with managing chronic health problems, potentially benefiting financially fragile hospitals and about 200,000 residents.

Mississippi legislature passes more digital-friendly method of issuing search warrants
SUMMARY: Mississippi is set to modernize its process of issuing and executing search warrants through legislation allowing electronic signatures. The bill, passed by both legislative chambers, awaits Governor Tate Reeves' approval. It permits law enforcement officers to request warrants digitally, and judges to approve them electronically. Digital affidavits can be submitted by individuals under oath. The electronic methods will have the same legal validity as traditional signatures. Security measures, like encryption and recording signature timestamps, are mandated to ensure authenticity. Upon the governor's approval, the law will take effect on July 1.
