Lawmakers kill bill looking to merge Mississippi University for Women and Mississippi State
SUMMARY: The Mississippi Senate rejected a bill proposing the consolidation of Mississippi University for Women (MUW) with Mississippi State University. The unexpected amendment to Senate Bill 2715, which originally aimed to move the Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science to Mississippi State's campus, was met with surprise from both institutions. Senate Education Chairman Dennis DeBar suggested a study on the feasibility of merging due to falling enrollment numbers. Although an amendment for a study passed, the bill was ultimately voted down with 27 senators opposing and 25 supporting it. MUW will now focus on rebranding to attract more male students.
