Jackson State readies for homecoming against Alabama State following last year’s Deion Sanders saga
SUMMARY: Jackson State is set to host Alabama State in a highly anticipated football game following an altercation between the two teams' coaches last year. After Jackson State's victory, head coach Deion Sanders attempted a handshake with Alabama State head coach Eddie Robinson Jr., resulting in a physical resistance. The incident was fueled by Robinson's feeling of disrespect from Sanders leading up to the game. Despite Sanders' absence from this year's game, tensions between the programs remain. The game holds even greater significance as Robinson had previously expressed a desire to face off against Sanders once more during Jackson State's homecoming game.

Mississippi lawmakers send bill restricting where transgender people can use bathroom to governor
SUMMARY: The Mississippi legislature passed the Securing Areas for Females Effectively and Responsibly (SAFER) Act after reviving it with a resolution allowing a vote beyond the deadline. Introduced by Republican Sen. Josh Harkins, this bill aims to limit transgender individuals' access to bathrooms and locker rooms corresponding to their gender identity. Despite critics likening it to discriminatory Jim Crow laws, the act received strong GOP support. Attorney General Lynn Fitch applauded its passage. Governor Tate Reeves is expected to sign it into law, following previous actions against transgender athletes' participation in women's sports and gender-affirming care for minors.

Mississippi Supreme Court: Lawsuit against public dollars going to private schools ‘lacks standing’Â
SUMMARY: The Mississippi Supreme Court, by a 7-2 majority, decided that Parents for Public Schools, Inc. (PPS) has no standing to challenge two bills that grant public funds to private schools. Represented by the ACLU, PPS argued that these bills violate the Mississippi Constitution, but the Court found no evidence that public education was adversely impacted. Despite an earlier ruling against private school funding by a Hinds County chancellor, the Court did not discuss the constitutionality of the funds' allocation. Senate Bills 2780 and 3064 involve appropriating $10 million of federal COVID-19 relief to private schools as grants.

Ole Miss students respond to anti-Israel protesters by singing ‘Star-Spangled Banner’
SUMMARY: At the University of Mississippi, a pro-Palestine protest was countered by students singing the American national anthem. Governor Tate Reeves shared a video of the counteraction with approval. To prevent violence like at Columbia and UCLA, law enforcement was deployed, but no violence ensued. Despite some offensive counter-protest remarks linking Palestinian actions to 9/11, the event, affirmed by UM spokesperson Jacob Batte as respectful of First Amendment rights, ended peacefully with no arrests or injuries.
