Lawmakers send new K-12 funding formula to Gov. Reeves
SUMMARY: Mississippi is replacing the Mississippi Adequate Education Program (MAEP) with a new K-12 funding formula, which is set to increase funding by $218 million. The Mississippi Student Funding Formula will allocate more resources per student, especially benefiting those from low-income families, English learners, and those with special needs. Despite criticism over transportation costs not being accounted for, the bill passed with bipartisan support and is heading to Governor Tate Reeves' desk. Reeves, a supporter of the changes, is expected to sign the bill into law, moving towards a fairer recalculated funding mechanism every four years.
