Federal judge blocks new state law targeting absentee voting
SUMMARY: A federal judge in Mississippi has blocked a new law that targeted absentee voting. The judge ruled that the law violated the Voting Rights Act and could not be enforced during this year's primaries and general election. The law included a list of people who could collect and send back a ballot that was mailed to another person, including postal service employees and family members or caregivers of the voter. Violators of the law would face penalties of a $3,000 fine and up to three years in jail. The lawsuit was filed by disability rights organizations and residents of Okolona.
