Could Union Station be the next home for Eudora Welty Library?
SUMMARY: Jackson city officials are moving forward with plans to tear down the Eudora Welty Library to make way for a green space for the Two Mississippi Museums. The removal of a communications tower on the site has caused delays in the demolition process. The city is exploring alternative options for a new Welty library, including a smaller branch at Union Station. The mayor believes that libraries no longer need as much space for books and should focus more on providing computer space and resources for job seekers and entrepreneurs. The city has also expressed interest in purchasing the former Jackson Municipal Library building, but the Mississippi Baptist Convention, the current owner, is unwilling to sell. The closure of the Welty Library due to lack of air conditioning has led to the relocation of its books, as well as those from the Richard Wright Library. Closing the Welty Library could potentially free up resources for the repair of other branches in the system. The city is seeking a federal grant to help with the relocation, and they expect to receive $3.7 million of the $5 million requested.
