Body discovered by fishermen in Pearl River confirmed to be missing Jackson man
SUMMARY: Fishermen found the body of Dau Mabil, a Sudanese refugee missing since March 25 from Jackson, in the Pearl River. The Lawrence County Sheriff suspects no foul play. However, Dau's brother Bul filed a court order to delay releasing the body, suspecting Dau's wife Karissa Bowley's involvement in his disappearance. Chancellor Dewayne Thomas ordered the state to conduct an autopsy, with a private one if required. Dau, part of the “Lost Boys” refugees, worked as a chef in Jackson. Efforts to solve his case continue, with family and officials, including Congressman Bennie Thompson, seeking a deeper investigation. Bowley challenges the order for autopsy authority.

Mississippi Supreme Court: Lawsuit against public dollars going to private schools ‘lacks standing’Â
SUMMARY: The Mississippi Supreme Court, by a 7-2 majority, decided that Parents for Public Schools, Inc. (PPS) has no standing to challenge two bills that grant public funds to private schools. Represented by the ACLU, PPS argued that these bills violate the Mississippi Constitution, but the Court found no evidence that public education was adversely impacted. Despite an earlier ruling against private school funding by a Hinds County chancellor, the Court did not discuss the constitutionality of the funds' allocation. Senate Bills 2780 and 3064 involve appropriating $10 million of federal COVID-19 relief to private schools as grants.

Ole Miss students respond to anti-Israel protesters by singing ‘Star-Spangled Banner’
SUMMARY: At the University of Mississippi, a pro-Palestine protest was countered by students singing the American national anthem. Governor Tate Reeves shared a video of the counteraction with approval. To prevent violence like at Columbia and UCLA, law enforcement was deployed, but no violence ensued. Despite some offensive counter-protest remarks linking Palestinian actions to 9/11, the event, affirmed by UM spokesperson Jacob Batte as respectful of First Amendment rights, ended peacefully with no arrests or injuries.
