Five former Memphis officers federally indicted in Tyre Nichols case
SUMMARY: Five former Memphis police officers have been charged in connection with the death of Tyre Nichols. An indictment filed in federal court listed three counts, including excessive force and failure to intervene, deliberate indifference, and witness tampering. The officers are accused of removing their body-worn cameras and discussing the force used on Nichols, making statements such as “we about to kill this man.” They also face criminal charges in Shelby County for second-degree murder, aggravated assault, and official misconduct. The Department of Justice launched an investigation into the Memphis Police Department to determine if there is a pattern of civil rights violations.
