Warner Bros in ‘active conversation’ to bring public screening of ‘Sinners’ to Clarksdale
SUMMARY: Community leaders in Clarksdale, the setting for Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners,” are pushing for a public screening of the film. Warner Bros. is in talks with Tyler Yarbough, who initiated the effort after sending an open letter to Coogler and the cast, urging a visit to Clarksdale. The letter, which garnered over 5,500 signatures, aims to spark creativity and economic growth in the city. Yarbough envisions a festival-like event with panel discussions on topics related to the movie, including the Creative Economy and the Blues. “Sinners,” a Jim Crow-era vampire film, grossed nearly \$250 million worldwide.

Study: Over 65% of Jackson metro restaurants mislabeling seafood as locally caught
SUMMARY: A study by SeaD Consulting revealed that over 65% of shrimp served in Jackson, Mississippi restaurants are mislabeled, with many claiming to offer locally caught shrimp but actually serving imported varieties. Testing of 44 restaurants before a new state seafood labeling law took effect found only 14 served authentic U.S. wild-caught shrimp. Eighteen dishes were explicitly misleading, and 10 implicitly so. Imported shrimp often lack the quality and labor standards of domestic shrimp, threatening local fisheries. The Southern Shrimp Alliance urges consumers to request proof of shrimp origin, hoping new labeling laws improve transparency and protect local livelihoods.

Mississippi State to churn out blueberry and sweet potato ice cream flavors
SUMMARY: Mississippi State University will introduce blueberry and sweet potato ice cream flavors at the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station (MAFES) Sales Store in 2026. These flavors honor Mississippi’s official state fruit and vegetable, the blueberry and sweet potato, designated in 2024 and 2025 respectively. MSU students, guided by Associate Professor Shecoya White, developed and tested multiple recipes, receiving community approval, especially from stakeholders in Vardaman, the “Sweet Potato Capital.” The flavors support Mississippi farmers and the state’s $197 million combined production value for these crops. These ice creams will join MSU’s existing 11 flavors, available in various sizes.

Lebby embraces ‘gauntlet’ of schedule as opportunity for Mississippi State
SUMMARY: In Jeff Lebby’s second year as Mississippi State head coach, the Bulldogs face a pivotal season with a daunting sixth-toughest schedule nationally, including games against Georgia, Tennessee, and Florida. After a 2-10 debut season marked by defensive struggles, Lebby remains optimistic, focusing on opportunity and improvement. The team benefits from key returners like quarterback Blake Shapen and linebacker Isaac Smith, alongside many new players from recruiting and the transfer portal. To bolster the defense, Mississippi State added experienced coaches such as Paul Rhoads and Mike MacIntyre. Lebby emphasizes internal progress and aims to improve markedly by the season opener on August 30.
