Race ‘played a role’ in decision to reject Black superintendent of education: senator

The Mississippi Senate voted Wednesday to reject Dr. Robert Taylor as superintendent of education, sparking accusations that race played a role in the .

During a Thursday interview on The Gallo Show, Senator John Horhn, D-, explained his displeasure with the decision to not confirm Taylor, who would have been the second Black superintendent in state history.

“There were all kinds of reasons thrown out there, but none that were really substantial enough, in my opinion, to reject this guy,” Horhn said. “I think race played a role in it. I don't think it was the entirety of the reasoning though.”

Among the arguments against Taylor, some senators contended that the Laurel native has not spent enough time in Mississippi. Taylor was unanimously approved by the State Board of Education (SBE) back in November after 30 years working in North Carolina.

Pro-Palestine protest held on Ole Miss campus

SUMMARY: A pro-Palestine protest at the of Mississippi in Oxford turned into a shouting match between protesters and counter-protesters. The protesters were evacuated from the campus and the protest was in response to the Israeli military response in Gaza. Over 200 counter-protesters were also present, throwing objects, shouting, and singing The Star-Spangled Banner. The organizers of the pro-Palestine protest are unknown and Governor Tate Reeves stated that enforcement is prepared to respond to any unlawful behavior. Bond denied for three charged in fatal Hinds County club shooting

The shooting occurred outside the Sugar Shack Club, resulting in the of 41-year-old Jason Harris and injuries to four others. Investigators believe the shooting was a result of an altercation involving the deceased and three other individuals who knew each other. Further arrests and charges are possible in the case.
