$590 million misspent in Mississippi during pandemic
SUMMARY: A report from the State Auditor of Mississippi, Shad White, revealed that over $590 million in unemployment compensation was misspent in the state during the COVID-19 pandemic. The report, released on September 6, highlighted the use of advanced data analytics tools to investigate fraud. White stated that the pandemic response resulted in a significant amount of taxpayer money being wasted, some of which is irretrievable. Unemployment claims in Mississippi increased from $59.6 million in the previous year to over $2.1 billion in fiscal year 2020, leading to widespread fraud and misspending. The Auditor's Office is working to identify and recover stolen funds.
